The Woodhaven Adult Senior Center was housed at St. Thomas the Apostle for 35 years.  That relationship ended last year and the senior center found themselves looking for a new home.  Unfortunately, the necessary space was hard to come by in Woodhaven and, in the interim, the seniors had to shuttle back and forth to a center in Richmond Hill.  Last week, a call went out to the seniors of Woodhaven to gather at the Ambulance Corps for a press conference, and they hoped they would hear some good news.

We were all hoping for a good turnout -- and good news.  And early on in the afternoon, we knew the turnout would be good.  We ended up with around 75 seniors and healthy representation from the local media -- NY1 was even there!

And they were excited because they had heard rumors of good news -- but you never know how these things turn out!  Not for nothing, though, how could you disappoint these folks?

The crowd was anxious for us to get started --

Here is our video report from that day -- a day that turned out to be pretty memorable in the history of Woodhaven -- and a special thanks to Queens Borough President Helen Marshall -- to our City Council Members, Elizabeth Crowley and Eric Ulrich --  to our State Assemblyman Mike Miller -- and our State Senator Joe Addabbo.

What a terrific afternoon, eh?

Folks, these are the reasons why people get involved -- because being part of afternoons like this are real rewarding.  It's a good feeling to give back to the community, to be part of something that makes so many people feel good.

So now the Ambulance Corps can get the necessary work done --and hopefully, the seniors will be in there before long.  And we are very grateful to Senator Addabbo, CMs Crowley and Ulrich, Assemblyman Miller, and QB President Helen Marshall.

We caught up with Mike Miller later that week and spoke about the seniors and the agreement he brokered -- he was thanked profusely by the other reps and given credit for bringing this all together.  Assemblyman Miller called in to our weekly web-based radio show and reacted to Ms. Marshall's kind words:

The media covered it well -- and spread the word that Woodhaven Seniors have a place to call home.

It was a great afternoon -- one that left everyone happy.  If you have any comments, or would like to suggest other projects, drop us a line at info@projectwoodhaven.com or projectwoodhaven@aol.com .
