Over the first 8 months of 2010, the Woodhaven Residents' Block Association have been strong advocates for the Woodhaven community.  From fighting against illegal parking, those annoying illegal signs -- from fighting for the return of the Carousel, and the reinstatement of Cease & Desist rules -- from fighting for our Library, to taking to the streets and fighting graffiti -- these and other important issues have been on the radar, and we've made it our business to make sure it's on everyone else's radar as well.

The WRBA is a not-for-profit organization -- all of its' members are volunteers.  As with all civic organizations, the WRBA depends on grants to survive -- and one thing to remember about those grants is that it is our money -- the taxes paid by the residents' of Woodhaven -- coming back into our community.  Unfortunately, not very much has come back our way and the WRBA is struggling.

And so, the WRBA depends on its' yearly dinner dance / fundraiser to stay alive -- and this year's dinner dance is very special as it is also Woodhaven's 175th Anniversary!  It will be held on Friday, November 19th at Joe Abbraciamento on Woodhaven Boulevard -- and anyone who has ever been to Joe Abbraciamento will tell you that you are guaranteed to get a great feed!  Plus a tasty appetizer and a delicious dessert!

Tickets are $65 for Non-Members, while members pay $60.  And you can order your tickets online, by clicking here!

If you don't want to order them online, call our office during the week at 718-296-3735 -- or you can mail a check to the WRBA at 84-20 Jamaica Avenue.

What a great opportunity to get together with your old friends from Woodhaven -- perhaps the ones you've reconnected with on Facebook.  You keep saying that you're going to get together, why not come out and party with us and help the Woodhaven community at the same time!  Buy your tickets and drop us a line and we'll work out the seating arrangements.

We've got a special slate of honorees this year -- all very important to Woodhaven today, and to Woodhaven's history . . .

First up is Leonora Lavan --

Leonora is the long-time president of the Woodhaven Cultural and Historical Society.  They have been responsible for those wonderful historical markers around town, and they have kept interest in Woodhaven's history alive and well!  We are very happy that Leonora will be honored in this historic year for Woodhaven -- it is long overdue.

Next, we have Neir's Tavern --

2010 saw the return of Neir's -- Woodhaven's 181-year old historic tavern.  Above are the 4 owners of Neir's, from left to right, Andy Biggans, David Eng, Alex Ewen, and Loycent Gordon.  We are proud to be able to cheer the return of a beloved historic tavern at our yearly celebration!

And here is the WRBA's very first inductees into our Hall of Fame -- Roger and Josephine Hennin --

Married for well over 50 years, all of them spent right here in Woodhaven, and members of the WRBA since it began in 1972 -- Roger and Josephine are a well-loved couple, very much respected and valued members of our community.  And we're so happy to be able to honor them both.

Again, tickets are $65 for Non-Members, and $60 for members.  Order your tickets online by clicking here!

It's going to be a fun evening -- lots of good music, dancing and nostalgia -- speaking of nostalgia, we'll be having our dinner in what used to be the Drake Movie Theater -- how many of you remember their dollar specials?

We really hope you'll consider supporting our community -- and if you're too far away to come, look for an announcement about other ways you can help us, and share this special night with us!

PS  Want to become a member of the WRBA?  Membership is $10, $5 for seniors -- click here for more info or sign up online!
