The Woodhaven Cultural & Historical Society held their last meeting before breaking for the summer this week and, per tradition, they ended the first half of the year with a Chinese Auction.  Before the auction began, they had a visitor.

His name is Bob Turner and he's going to be running in this year's election in the race for Congress in our district.  Bob is not a life-long politician, in fact he's brand new at the game.  You can read more about him here.  Of interest to ur readers is the fact that Bob was born and raised right here in Woodhaven, and he's a graduate of St. Thomas the Apostle.

Bob had a few friends in the room, and even ran into a few old ones.  He said that he hoped to have the opportunity to represent our community.  Here is what else Bob Turner had to say:

Afterwards, the members bagan milling about, looking through the items up for grabs.  Here is our coverage of last year's auction.

So, here's how a Chinese Auction works -- everyone brings in items to auction off. They don't have to be fancy items, expensive items -- they can be nick-nacks. The items are laid out on tables, each with a plastic cup or a paper bag in front of it.

Then, you purchase a strip of tickets -- $5 for 30 tickets. And you walk around, dropping one or more tickets in the cup or bag for the items you want to bid on. If you see an item you really want, you can drop 5 or 10 tickets into the bag, giving yourself a better chance of winning it. So, you see, there's a little strategy involved.

Then they go around, pick a winning from each bag, and if you have the ticket -- you're in luck!

We did good this year -- we picked up a labeler, an answeing machine, and a few books of poetry by Woodhaven's own Rose Kavanaugh.

This is a nice organization and it deserves our support.  WCHA President Leonora Lavan will be among the honorees this November at the WRBA's annual dinner dance/fundraiser.  It will be held at Joe Abbraciamento's on Friday, November 20th.  Tickets will go on sale soon!

The next meeting of the WCHS will be on Wednesday September 25th at 1 PM.  Dr. Firth H. Fabend will present a lecture on "Patroons and Plowmen, Pietism and Politics: Dutch Settlers in the Hudson Valley in the Seventeenth and Eighteenth Centuries"
