You should begin receiving your 2010 Census Forms in the mail this week (if you haven't received it already). The United States Census is taken every 10 years and the results are used to allocate Congressional seats, electoral votes, and -- of importance to Woodhaven -- local funding.
It's been estimated that for every person who fails to fill out the Census -- it costs their community 20K over 10 years. Twenty thousand dollars. That's 20K that goes to another neighborhood instead of Woodhaven if you fail to take 10 minutes to fill out the Census form.
And it's been estimated that only 40% of Woodhaven was counted in 2010. So, when they look to cut hospitals, or fire departments, or uniformed police -- where do they look to cut? The less populous areas.
So -- in an effort to promote the Census, the Greater Woodhaven Development Corporation and the Woodhaven Residents' Block Association are sponsoring a "Woodhaven Census 2010" Night at the Cordon Bleu Caterers on Thursday March 11 from 7 PM to 9 PM. There will be light refreshments and free sweatshirts. No tickets are needed and admission is free.
There will be Census Officials on hand to demonstrate how to fill out the form -- and we will file a full report on the evening. Think of it as a fun way to get out and have a snack inside the new Cordon Bleu -- which, if you haven't seen it since it reopened, is fantastic looking!
