The Forest Park School has been offering our parents/guardians the opportunity to participate in workshops facilitated by our very supportive staff to help them help their children achieve both academic and social success.

On Tuesday, May 18, 2010, Ms. Washington hosted a “Where in the World is ???” workshop.  Parents and guardians in attendance discussed the many countries that they were from finding them and marking them on the map of the world.  With laptops on hand, we were able to learn of the different climates, population, and cultures of the many countries represented.  Parents and guardians in attendance received booklets on “Helping Students with Social Studies” as well as a beach ball of the globe so they can do this activity with their children over the summer.

On Friday, May 21, 2010, Ms. O’Shaughnessy hosted a Fundations and Wilson workshop to let our parents and guardians know what all the tapping is about.  In our lower grades, K – 2, the students tap out the letters and sounds of words.  When they reach grades 3 – 5, the foundation has been set and they can continue with what they’ve learned.  Various tools were distributed to allow our parents and guardians the opportunity to work with their children over the summer as  a review.  Parents in attendance received grade appropriate sight word books.

And on Wednesday, May 26, 2010, Ms. Gould hosted a “Building Your Vocabulary” workshop for all parents and guardians.  She shared various activities that our parents can do with their children  to help them build their vocabulary.  Children’s Dictionaries were distributed to all parents and guardians in attendance of lower grade children.  Dictionary/Thesaurus’ were distributed to all  parents and guardians in attendance of upper grade children.  In addition, grade appropriate sight word books were distributed accordingly.

These workshops are funded with Title I Parent Involvement funding.
