Last year, we caught a cold and as a result we missed this event -- so we were very happy to see a return engagement scheduled for this Spring. "Voices of Victory" is the official gospel choir of St. John's University -- they have traveled the world and been featured on many televised programs -- and everyone who attended last year's shows said that they were outstanding. We were looking forward to this. The concert was held at Emanuel Church of Christ, at 91st Avenue and Woodhaven Boulevard -- it's a beautiful church, with a rich history. Originally, Emanuel Church of Christ sat in the middle of what is now Woodhaven Boulevard, on 89th Avenue. But it was torn down when Woodhaven Boulevard was expanded and rebuilt in its' current location. The concert started with a beautiful rendition of "Feeling Good" by Shakira Abney-Wisdom -- what a great way to start a concert that generated nothing but good feelings. Here is a video of this great performance --
Here's the choir getting their picture taken for the Queens Chronicle -- And here they are, on stage -- as we noted earlier, we missed the show last year and were looking forward to this -- and they did not disappoint. It was a terrific show. The show was advertised in the local papers, we posted notices on Project Woodhaven, on our Facebook page, Twitter -- the word was spread -- But as you can see below, the community didn't exactly respond -- So unfortunate. How many times have we heard the complaint that there's nothing going on in Woodhaven? Here we have a renowned choir putting on a wonderful show -- and they're playing to all those empty seats. But it didn't dampen the enthusiasm of the performers -- or the crowd. And a great time was had by all. Here's another video -- "Back to Eden" with a solo performance by Bryan Perry --
We hope that Voices of Victory will come back to Woodhaven, to Emanuel, and put on another show -- maybe we can get a bigger crowd to turn up -- Emanuel Church is very involved with the Woodhaven community -- as they have been for many years. In fact, the Woodhaven Art Expo was held just 2 days before this, in the basement -- here we did a mashup of the art show and the Voices of Victory Concert -- with an assist by Bob Marley -- a pretty nice combo, eh?
And let's wrap up this update with a few beautiful shows of Emanuel -- Many thanks to the folks at Emanuel for bringing a beautiful show to Woodhaven -- and thanks for all you do!
