STUCK IN WOODHAVEN

By the time the sun rose, Woodhaven residents woke up to the realization that we were gonna have a long day.  By the end of the day, the Mayor was proclaiming victory and satisfied with the way our city handled this storm --

We know better.

We have more pictures and stuff coming -- but this series of pictures is a great example of how our day went here in Woodhaven.  As you know, we've been organizing -- signing up Block Captains who can quickly report conditions on their block.  In turn, we can report those conditions and they would be taken care of.

Here's one street that was reported twice -- at 10:45 AM and at 4:30 PM -- this is 75th Street between 93rd Avenue and Atlantic Avenue.

It's a beautiful block, isn't it?  See how the residents have nicely shoveled the sidewalk?  They even hung pretty snowflakes on their trees!

Again -- we called this street in early this morning -- and later in the day, there was an emergency and the vehicle responding to the emergency got stuck.

And can you imagine anything more frustrating than having your rescuers a few feet away -- yet unable to help you?  Please understand, we're not knocking the rescue workers -- quite the opposite -- we have the utmost respect for these people... they save lives.  Our lives.

We're angry about the incompetence that results in scenes like this -- scenes that impede our rescue crews and draw resources from other rescue workers.

Look -- here we have the Fire Department having to come out and rescue our EMTs -- video courtesy of BobbyWoodhaven --

This street was called in directly to the Department of Sanitation.  At 10:45 AM this morning.  And by late afternoon, this was the result.

And here's why -- look at this street.

Frequent visitors to this site know that over the past month, we've been urgently signing up Block Captains.

These residents did an outstanding job today.  They kept us informed, and we were able to call in a bunch of streets that needed plowed.  But the results were lousy.

Residents had to resort to parking on the Atlantic Avenue median -- but that's a minor inconvenience compared to an Ambulance that can't get down a street.

The fire department had to come out --

Here's the money shot.  People worry about them closing the local fire departments because they won't be around during a fire.  Look at the picture below -- there ain't no fire -- the FDNY is on hand to rescue our EMTs.

Look -- I know that with every such post, I run the risk of offending one of these groups or unions by typing something stupid.  We just want to make it clear that we admire every one of these men and women that come to Woodhaven to clear the roads, rescue the sick and needy, etc.  And we are very grateful for your efforts.

It's a job we can't imagine how hard it is to do.
