Remembering Manor Sporting Goods / Schwinn Bicycle

In the first of a series of pages highlighting vintage ads (click here), we saw the following ad for the Manor Sporting Goods Co.

How many kids around Woodhaven got their first baseball glove from Manor Sporting Goods?  I know I did!  Here is some information and photos, passed along by the Sherman Family.  Manor Sporting Goods was opened in the 1920's by Louis Sherman.  His son, Marty Sherman, began working in the store in 1947 after leaving the Navy.  Here, Marty Sherman is shown in a clipping from a February 1973 copy of The Leader-Observer.

Here is a photograph of Manor Sporting Goods' Bowling Department.

And here are Mitch and Larry, two of Manor's employees.  The gentleman on the left (Mitch Weber) later went on to own Manor when Marty Sherman sold it to him in 1978.

The Sherman Family opened up Schwinn Cyclery on 94th and Jamaica around 1966 (Louis Sherman would pass away one year later).

Here's the interior of Schwinn Cyclery.  Gosh, does that bring back memories, or what?  I can recall being a young boy, walking into that store, looking up at the "big boy" bikes -- the 10-speeds -- and wanting one very badly.

And finally, Schwinn Cyclery circa 1970.  An exercise bike!  Check out that great big horn on the wall.

Many thanks to the Sherman Family for sharing these pictures, and for their many decades of service to the Woodhaven Community.
