The Forest Park Carousel has been a part of Woodhaven for over a century -- and for all of the good memories that it has brought to us, there have been times where the memories were not so good.  We have documented some of those times on Project Woodhaven -- check out these newspaper clippings from the 1960's and 70s.  And recently the news has not been too cheerful -- see here -- and this is just in the last two weeks!

Forest Park Carousel Close to Last Roundup - NY Daily News

Forest Park Carousel Still Stalled

City Finds No Operator For Carousel

Still  No Operator For Carousel

Last Go Round For The Carousel?

Interest in the Forest Park Carousel is high --but despite the drumbeat of bad news -- there are a few bright spots.

For one, check out the outstanding reaction to the "Save the Carousel" T-Shirts sold by the Woodhaven Residents' Block Association over the weekend at the Street Fair.  All T-shirts were sold out in a few hours -- but more are on their way and you will be able to order them online -- we'll make an announcement soon!  Here is Councilmember Elizabeth Crowley with hers --

And then, the Carousel was featured in this past weekend's episode of HBO's Bored to Death -- here is a scene, courtesy of Mr. Woodhaven:

Nice to see it in action again -- even if it's fictional.  Okay, so we had the T-Shirts and the TV Show -- but today we spotted something different at the Carousel -- it's getting a brand new iron fence -- the outer fence is still up, the cyclone fence with the barbed wire on top -- and the new fence is just inside --

Looks sharp.  We wonder if the outer fence will stay up until a new vendor signs up.  The new fence will be a selling point and tells us that the city is making an investment in keeping this carousel where it is -- so this is an encouraging development.

The main entrance hasn't been done yet --

A couple of good shots of both fences -- you can see the cyclone fence was a lot taller than this new one.

We managed to sneak a little peek inside the fence.  We hate to ask -- but does that look like graffiti that's been painted over on the fence?  Or maybe just where the yellow paint was wearing away.

Let's hope that padlock comes off the gate soon and some local kids get to ride our Carousel instead of actors.

And as a bonus -- a look at the Carousel from back in April -- it's beautiful, isn't it?
